The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) is set to make history with its first-ever Rural Roots game in Oyen, Alberta. This groundbreaking event, scheduled for June 8, will see the Sylvan Lake Gulls face off against the Lethbridge Bulls in celebrating small-town baseball heritage. An announcement was made on Thursday, March 13, at Spitz Stadium in Lethbridge, which included Town of Oyen Mayor Doug Jones and Recreation Director Lee Tucker, Lethbridge Bulls owner and WCBL President Kevin Kvame, and WCBL Managing Director of Corporate Partnerships and Marketing Mark Stiles.
A Return to Baseball's Grassroots
The Rural Roots game isn't just another game on the calendar. It's a homecoming, marking the 30th anniversary of the Oyen Pronghorns' championship victory in the league. This event promises to reconnect fans with the WCBL's humble beginnings and showcase the enduring spirit of community baseball.
"Without these communities like Oyen and others throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan, we wouldn't have the Western Canadian Baseball League as we know it today," explains Kevin Kvame, WCBL President and Lethbridge Bulls owner.

A Weekend of Baseball and Community Spirit
The game is the centerpiece of a weekend-long celebration in Oyen. Lee Tucker, Manager of Parks and Recreation, outlines some of the exciting plans, including a Pronghorns Alumni golf tournament, a minor baseball game featuring a team from Lethbridge who will venture up the highway on the bus with the Bulls, a baseball kids camp hosted by Bulls players, BBQ, and pancake breakfast are all just a tiny part of the activities planned.
"It's going to be a real big event for our town. We're really looking forward to it," Tucker enthuses.
Bridging Past and Present
The Rural Roots game connects multiple generations of baseball talent:
Doug Jones, former Oyen Pronghorns manager and current Mayor of Oyen Aqil Samuel, Sylvan Lake Gulls GM and former Pronghorns player, and Graham Schetzsle, Sylvan Lake Gulls owner and former Pronghorns player. Fun fact: Samuel was the first-ever hitter for the Pronghorns many moons ago. There are conflicting reports on how that at-bat turned out. Jones is also the founder of the Lethbridge Bulls, who debuted in the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League in 1999.
This blend of past and present creates a unique atmosphere, allowing fans to witness the league's evolution while honoring its roots.
Challenges and Opportunities
Hosting a WCBL game presents both challenges and opportunities for a small town like Oyen, "We don't have an enclosed stadium like this. So to make it work for us, we may have to make those adjustments," Tucker explains. However, it won't go unnoticed with community involvement, volunteers, and the local Badlands Badgers baseball academy, who have pledged their support and showcased the town's commitment to the sport. The game also offers a chance to inspire the next generation of players in rural communities.
"I think for the younger kids here, they get to see that there is a real chance for them," Jones reflects, highlighting the potential impact on local youth.
As for the Bulls vs Gulls game itself Jones held back with any early predictions, "I haven't flipped the coin yet" Jones quipped trying to stay as partial as possible.
A New Chapter for the WCBL
The Rural Roots game represents more than just a single event. It's a potential blueprint for the league's future, expanding the league's reach into smaller communities, celebrating the history and heritage of Western Canadian baseball, and creating unique experiences for players and fans alike.
"We're on to something big for the league here, you know, in future years as well," Samuel predicts.
